INSPIRATION
Robert Rodrigues directs actor Carlos Gallardo on the set of his $7000, break-through, indie film El Mariachi (1993)
I was very inspired by Robert Rodriguez and how he made El Mariachi in Texas and in Mexico. I read his book “Rebel Without a Crew" Three Times and took his advice on how to make a no-budget feature. Like Robert, I wrote a script around things I knew I could get. For example, I had access to an Arri-S 16mm, non-sync camera, the DGA building in Hollywood, a fashion company in downtown LA, a Buick Skylark convertible and a city filled with well lit, beautiful locations. I was determined to replicate his strategy here in Los Angeles.
